Cold Workshops and Resin: Why Winter Cures Go Wrong

Resin work is unforgiving about temperature, and winter workshops are where beginners lose whole projects. With European gas up roughly 120% since the start of 2026 and winter forecasts moving higher, heating a workshop through a long cure is a real cost — which makes planning worth more than usual.

What temperature does to epoxy

Curing is a chemical reaction, and reaction rate depends on temperature.

Cold slows the cure, sometimes to the point where it does not complete. A partially cured surface stays tacky indefinitely; it does not eventually harden if you wait longer.

Cold increases viscosity, so bubbles rise more slowly and get trapped.

Cold surfaces cause condensation, and moisture on the wood produces cloudiness and adhesion failure.

Manufacturers specify minimum temperatures for a reason, and they generally mean the temperature throughout the cure, not at the moment of pouring.

Working within the constraint

Warm the workshop before the pour, not during. The wood and moulds need to reach temperature too. A cold board in a warm room produces condensation exactly where you do not want it.

Insulate the pour rather than the room. A box over the piece with a low-wattage heat source holds temperature for a fraction of the energy of heating the whole space.

Warm the resin, not by much. Slightly warmer resin flows better and releases bubbles more readily. Overheating shortens pot life dramatically.

Batch your pours. One heated session for several pieces rather than repeated warm-ups.

What can be done cold

Cutting, planing, sanding, joinery and dry assembly are all temperature-tolerant. Winter is a reasonable time for the woodworking half of a project and a poor time for the resin half.

Planning the year that way — wood in winter, pours when the workshop is warm — is cheaper than heating for cures.

The safety point

Uncured resin is a sensitiser, and ventilation is not optional. This is where winter creates a genuine conflict: the instinct is to close everything to keep heat in.

Do not. Ventilate during the pour and the early cure. Sensitisation, once developed, does not reverse — and it ends resin work permanently.

Heat costs money. Losing the ability to work with the material costs the hobby.
